Here are some pigeons eating popcorn on New York Avenue. This is almost directly across from the NY Avenue Presbyterian Church. The weather yesterday was so nice that I wandered the streets for a while in the afternoon. I sat for a while on a bench near where these birds were enjoying their lunch. This photo shows a group of pigeons munching away, but when I initially walked up a group of smaller brown birds had congregated there.
There were a great many friendly animals roaming the streets this weekend! I can’t wait to share more photos (spoiler: White House animals!) Hopefully we’ll have some more illustrated images up soon – animals you wouldn’t necessarily see in a city but might if you wandered around a farm or woods!

I encountered this little guy a couple of weekends ago. Someone had dropped a chunk of bread in the middle of the street, right around D and 4th I think, and he was going after it relentlessly. I don’t know if it was hunger that made him unfazed by the cars zipping around him, or if he’s such a city-savvy animal! Either way, I admire his tenacity!

My sister had a baby last summer and bought this swing. Before the baby was born, Tigger would curl up in it and take her kitty naps. Isn’t she cute? After the baby was born, Tigger had to share, but now the baby is too big for the swing so Tigger has it for herself again
the price of inattention:

i’m sorry! i tried to take pictures of these dogs but wasn’t sharp or attentive or fast enough. the dog in the last photo was really cute! he’s a great pyrenees, much like Belle in the Japanese cartoon Belle & Sebastian based on the French cartoon books! So adorable! From a distance he looked like a giant polar bear.

The Great American Horse is so friendly, it lets humans ride around on it. HA! What a sap. Some horses are also compulsive gamblers.

This is Penny, who lives with one of my best friends here in DC. I love the soft wisps of fur on the tips of her ears! A few seconds before this photo was taken, Penny was peeking out the open window, into the apartment courtyard. It was mid-September and the sticky summer months a nascent memory. Maybe she’s gazing out to the covered pool and wishing it were still open!

I saw these little birds last weekend outside the American History Museum. Birds are one of my favorite animals to watch. They are so elegant and small and beautiful. In the summer (when there are more birds about) I carry around scraps of bread so I can feed them. I think these particular birds had all found a piece of bread and were sharing it together.

What do we have here? Parading across the blustery tundra, tromping through the boreal forests of Great Northern America, the mighty moose serves as a role model to all animals! Baron of his domain! Loving friend and formidable opponent! God bless America (and all of her friendly animals!)

My friends and I met these ducks last summer. We rented canoes in Georgetown on a hot Sunday morning and rowed around singing songs to ourselves and the city. This image of a Mama Duck and her babies swimming dutifully after her is one of my favorite memories from the summer. I wonder where her babies are now? Maybe now they have babies of their own!
